As-Sakīnah: the peace Allah places in the heart
What it means
As-Sakīnah is the deep inner calm, tranquility, and reassurance that Allah places in the heart. It settles fear and agitation, especially during moments of hardship, uncertainty, or trials. It is not just emotional calm, but a peace granted by Allah that brings clarity, steadiness, and spiritual confidence.
In the Quran
The word Sakīnah appears six times in the Quran (2:248, 9:26, 9:40, 48:4, 48:18, 48:26). Two of them:
ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ وَعَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
“Then Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers”
“It is He who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers that they would increase in faith along with their [present] faith.”
Classical Arabic dictionaries
- Ibn Manẓūr, Lisān al-ʿArabلسان العرب
- Defines Sakīnah as gentleness and dignity (al-wadāʿah wa al-waqār). It also records that it means mercy, tranquility (ṭumaʾnīnah) or victory, and explains 9:26 as what calmed their hearts.
- al-Rāghib al-Isfahānī, Mufradāt Alfāz al-Qurʾān
- Records several views. One is that Sakīnah is the removal of fear (zawāl al-ruʿb). Another is that it is an angel that calms and reassures the believer's heart.
Reflect
- A calmness from Allah that settles the heart
- A firmness and reassurance that strengthens faith
- A tranquil state that replaces fear with trust
As-Sakīnah is the quiet peace Allah places in your heart when life feels heavy, when nothing outside changes, but inside, you feel steady.
